What a blast from the past! Feeling a little sated after grilled hot dogs and potato salad, Americans? Refresh yourself with this. One of my favorite whip-smart pundits, Hugh Hewitt, tweeted this out today. It's a tiny video of the irreplaceable John Wayne and various others, including Lucille Ball, Bob Hope, Leslie Uggams, William Shatner, Ann Margaret, Greg Morris, and even Tommy Smothers (!), singing an anthem for and to their country, circa 1970. Fun.

A side note. A lot of people love John Wayne for his authenticity, or for his stature, his love of country, the pure American integrity of performances like the unforgettable one he gave of a very flawed man in "The Searchers". That's a dark, psychological western that is on the short list of many critics as one of the greatest American films of all time. I get all that and agree with it. The thing that leaps out in this piece is what always arrests me, though-- those completely unique vocal rhythms. Have you noticed the way he pauses, and then surges on, and then pauses again. Nobody else talks quite like that-- it's pure music to listen to...

I had to watch it again after talking about Wayne's vocal patterns! Interestingly, "Lucy" seemed to me to be among the most emotionally moved by the part of "God Bless America" she was singing. Love her too...

I don't know too much about these people, but are they Christians who lead a sanctified life?
Also, is patriotism sin? We are told not to love the world or the things of the world. The Greek Kosmos for world, seems to include things pertaining to the social order. Just wondering how it all fits....

Hmmmm.... I do appreciate various kinds of 'art' and 'craft', and believe God to be the Creator of talent, humor, music and wholesome fun. Christian Discourse's category "Pop Culture" is presumably a place for discussion of such, both serious and light. It's great to have holidays and to feel celebratory!
The arguments in other threads about rendering to Caesar, etc. and what that means, rage on, and probably always will....
Happy long weekend to all.

How does "carnal mindedness" as represented in your video find appeal with "Christians" and "Churches" unless they too are "Carnal Minded"?

Sorry, there is too much of a gulf in our two perspectives on this. I wish you well.

Suit yourself, but friendship with the world is enmity with God (James 4:4). Also, "bonding" with wicked world Kingdoms misrepresents Christ to those polarized by them.
