In 2 Peter 3:12 -13 how do you understand the concept of new heavens and a new earth?
Is that concept to be understood:
(h) two or more of the above?
(i) none of the above other?
I keep coming back to the Big Bang being the voice of God in creation. And the scientists say another is coming. And Peter describes this to a T. But even if the Big Bang theory is false, I believe Peter speaks of a literal new heavens and earth. There are only two ages mentioned in scripture. This present evil age and the age to come. So everything must fit in either of these two ages. And the age to come is perfect without sin and death. Also eternal.
Jesus said I had a mansion awaiting after death. Not sure what I'd need a mansion for in Heaven.
When Christians die (sleep) they go to Heaven. When Jesus returns he will bring these with him.
But I would not have you ignorant, brothers, concerning those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and arose again, so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will not precede those who are asleep. 1 Thessalonians 4:13–15
He reunites the souls from heaven with their glorified bodies in the resurrection on the last day.
For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.
Followed by the "rapture" of the living.
Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we shall be forever with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words. 1 Thessalonians 4:16–18
He destroys the universe with a great noise and fervent heat.
But the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat. The earth also and the works that are in it will be burned up. 2 Peter 3:10
And he creates the New Heavens and earth where the elect will live forever with the Lord.
while you are waiting for and desiring the coming of the day of God, in which the heavens will be destroyed by fire and the elements will be consumed by intense heat? But, according to His promise, we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells. 2 Peter 3:12–13
I haven't heard this mapped out quite like this but I don't find an area which I disagree with.
For the most part I haven't really heard this timeline mapped out but its almost identical to my unmapped timeline.
Heaven is a waiting place untill the New Earth is created/revealed. Once the New earth is created/revealed that's where the righteous of humanity deemed so by their faith in Christ Jesus will dwell with their King.
